A yellow Renaissance castle on the shore of the Wörthersee, joined to a sleek contemporary wing and a very large spa, with Casino Velden a short stroll along the lake. This is the summer pairing in the guide, and the one with the most serious poker pedigree.
Rooms and suites
The castle dates from the turn of the seventeenth century, when it was built for the Khevenhüller family, and it has been a hotel since the late nineteenth century. German-speaking viewers know it as the setting of the early-1990s television series Ein Schloss am Wörthersee. Under Falkensteiner it was reborn after a major rebuild that added a striking modern wing of glass and white render beside the old towers.
That split defines the rooms. Castle rooms have character, thick walls, vaulted details and views over the park, but vary in size and light. Rooms in the modern wing are larger, calmer and more consistent, with floor-to-ceiling glass towards the lake. Suites are generous, and families are well catered for. Choose the castle for romance, the new wing for comfort.
Dining and bars
Breakfast is served in the castle ballroom, which is a lovely way to start a summer day. The restaurants cover Austrian and Mediterranean cooking competently, with good lake fish and Carinthian specialities, but they do not quite match the ambition of the spa or the setting, hence the lowest dining score in this guide. Velden itself has plenty of alternatives within walking distance, including the casino restaurant with its lake terrace.
Spa and wellness
The Acquapura Lake SPA is the hotel’s standout: around 3,600 square metres of pools, saunas, relaxation rooms and treatment suites, open all year and included for hotel guests. In summer, a garden pool and a beach club with private lake access take over, and the water of the Wörthersee is famously warm for an Alpine lake. Golf courses and, in winter, ski areas in three countries are within reach.
Service
Service is friendly and relaxed, with a resort mood rather than grand-hotel formality. At peak summer and during the poker festivals it can feel stretched, and responses are sometimes slower than the price suggests. The team is knowledgeable about the casino calendar and the lake’s events.
The town
Velden is Carinthia’s best-known lake resort: a promenade, a small harbour, boat trips to Maria Wörth and Pörtschach, and a lively summer scene of bars and concerts. Klagenfurt and Villach are close, and Slovenia and Italy are an easy day trip. Out of season the town is much quieter, and some venues close. The casino sits on the lakefront, a few minutes from the castle gates.
